New York Announces Big Plans for 2024 Road Projects
New York is set for an extensive lineup of road construction initiatives in 2024, with a primary goal of addressing historical issues affecting underprivileged communities due to highways built decades ago. Central New York: A notable project is the Interstate 81 Viaduct Project, a multi-year effort costing $2.25 billion. The aim is to reconnect neighborhoods in downtown Syracuse that were separated when the viaduct was constructed in the 1950s and 1960s. Work began this year on the northern and southern interchanges of I-81 and I-481. New York City: In the Bronx, the third phase of a substantial $1.7 billion project continues to combat pollution in the heavily-traveled Hunts Point section. The focus is on reconstructing the Bruckner Expressway/Sheridan Boulevard interchange to redirect truck traffic from local streets, particularly in a borough known for high asthma rates. Orange County: Towards the end of next year, Orange County will witness the initiation of the second phase of the State Route 17 Exit 122 Interchange Project. This project aims to enhance safety and mobility on Route 17 near the interchange with Crystal Run Road and East Main Street in Wallkill. Monroe County: In Monroe County, bridges carrying I-490 over the Erie Canal and Kreag Road in the Town of Perinton are slated for replacement. Suffolk County: Ongoing reconstruction of State Route 347 in Suffolk County includes adding a travel lane between Gibbs Pond Road and Hallock Road. Crosswalks, a shared-use path, and upgraded bus stops are part of the plan. New York State Thruway: The Thruway's New York Division, covering Westchester, Orange, and Rockland counties, has 30 projects totaling over $330 million planned for the next three years. These projects encompass pavement repairs, bridge rehabilitation, and enhancements along various stretches of I-95, I-87, and I-90. Ongoing Thruway Projects: Continued projects involve a $61.8 billion pavement improvement along a four-mile stretch of I-95, rehabilitation of eleven bridges, and replacement of two pedestrian bridges. Additionally, there's a $13.9 million project to extend the Mario M. Cuomo Bridge side path to Lyndhurst Mansion in Tarrytown, a bridge replacement in New Rochelle, and the ongoing modernization of the Thruway's 27 rest stops. As of October, 12 service areas have reopened, and construction on 12 others has begun. The $450 million project aims to rebuild or upgrade all 27 rest stops, featuring outdoor seating, Taste NY farm markets, and picnic areas.
